Interview by Alex Montgomery, Studio Blogger
For years, music fans have been captivated by the raw energy and unique sound of The RoyElvisBand. The band’s lead singer, Roy Dawson, isn’t just a talented musician; he’s also a legendary figure with a fascinating backstory. As both a spiritual alchemist and a powerful frontman, Roy has made his mark on the music world, earning a dedicated following and a reputation as a truly one-of-a-kind artist.
Roy's nickname, "RoyElvis," came from his early karaoke days, where he would sing everything from country blues to gender-bending dare-you songs. But it wasn't just his voice that drew people in; it was his powerful stage presence and the pressure he put on himself to always deliver an unforgettable performance.
I had the privilege of sitting down with Roy for a candid interview where we discussed his early days, his thoughts on the music industry, and the challenges he’s faced throughout his career.
Alex Montgomery: Roy, it’s a pleasure to sit down with you today. You’ve had such an interesting career with The RoyElvisBand, and I’m sure people have been asking you for years to do an interview. What’s it like for you, knowing that you’ve got this kind of following?
Roy Dawson: [laughs] Yeah, people have been asking for years. It’s wild, to be honest. The crazy thing is, when I first started out—doing karaoke gigs and singing at bars—people would hear me and say, "Man, you should be on stage, you’ve got something special." But I had no idea what that really meant back then. I was just singing because I loved it, especially singing songs like "Crazy" by Patsy Cline and "If I Can Dream" by Elvis Presley. When I hit those high notes, the crowd just... went wild. But there’s always pressure. You’re giving them what they want, and they want to be blown away every time.
Alex Montgomery: You really made a name for yourself with your vocal performances. You have such a unique sound, and I know there were people who didn’t understand you or your style. What was that like for you?
Roy Dawson: The truth is, I didn’t know what was going on behind the scenes. There were a lot of lies circulating online about me. Some people were jealous—hating on the fact that I had a unique voice and stage presence. But, I always stayed true to myself. The truth eventually comes out, you know? And now, the people who bought into the lies, they’ve come back and said, "We’re sorry we believed all that nonsense." It’s funny how things work out.
Alex Montgomery: Absolutely, it’s great to see the truth come out. But I’ve gotta ask—what’s it like in person? I mean, you’ve got this larger-than-life presence. Some people might say you’re a bit intimidating. What’s your secret?
Roy Dawson: [smirks] Well, I guess I’ve got that strong presence because I’ve always been strong, physically and mentally. I’ve worked hard on myself—trained in many ways, whether it’s music or combat skills. I’ve got these blues eyes that people seem to notice, and yeah, I’ve had that Johnny Cash, Jim Morrison vibe going on. And my stage presence? It’s all about connecting with the crowd. But to be honest, I don’t like messing with people—unless I really need to. [laughs]
Alex Montgomery: We can definitely see that. There’s a certain magnetism to you. But you also surround yourself with an incredible team. I’ve heard you call your guitarists your "six guns." Tell me more about your band.
Roy Dawson: My band? They’re like my family. I call them my "six guns" because they’ve got my back no matter what. I’ve got the best guitar players in the world, an amazing drummer, and a bass player who’s saved my life more times than I can count. It’s not just about me. We’re all stars, and we all work together to bring the best show possible. It’s about loyalty. I believe in them, and they believe in me. If we’re on stage together, we’re giving the crowd everything we’ve got. No exceptions.
Alex Montgomery: That’s incredible. It sounds like you’ve built a true brotherhood. But let’s shift gears for a second—tell me about your Rottweiler, Sampson. He sounds like a character in his own right!
Roy Dawson: [laughs] Sampson is something else. He’s a 130-pound Big Black Rottweiler, and he’s got a heart of gold. He lives with me out on 10 acres of land, surrounded by soldiers who are all my neighbors. The first time people meet me, they often think I’m some kind of ex-soldier or a Navy SEAL because of my combat skills. I’m quick on my feet, and let’s click here just say I can handle myself if I need to. There’s a crazy story about me breaking my finger saving my little Jack Russell from Sampson one time. He was just being a dog, but I didn’t want my little guy to get hurt. The speed I had to use? Bruce Lee style, man. [grins] It was numb by the time it happened, but I’m proud I was able to stop the situation from getting worse.
Alex Montgomery: [laughs] That’s wild! But it’s clear that your heart’s in the right place. You really care click here about those around you—both human and animal. Now, I know you love performing live. You’ve said that you’re more of a stage performer than a studio guy. Can you share what makes live shows so special for you?
Roy Dawson: Absolutely. Live performances are everything to me. There’s something about the energy from the crowd that just can’t be replicated in a studio. Sure, we’ve got great recordings, but when you’re click here on stage and the lights are in your face, and you’re looking out at thousands of people who are feeding off your energy, that’s the magic. If you train hard enough and bring your A-game, it’s not hard to blow the crowd away. That’s why I love it so much. It’s live, raw, and real. And when we hit the stage, it’s a show that people website will remember for a long time.
Alex Montgomery: You’ve got a lot of wisdom, Roy. Any advice for other lead singers or performers out there?
Roy Dawson: Know your lines. But if you mess up, just stay in tune, mumble a bit, and make it funny. People love that! Shows you’re human. And always let your band members help you out—they’ve got your back. My bass player once saved me from tripping and almost breaking my neck by catching me when I stepped on a cord. You’ve got to train your band to look out for each other on and off the stage. It’s a team effort.
